BACHELOR OF EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College offers a number of Bachelor of Education programmes on a full (4 years) and part-time (5 years) basis.B.Ed. in Early Childhood Education (full and part-time)
This programme prepares student teachers to teach pupils between the ages of 4 and 7 years (K – 2). There is a strong focus on developing children’s physical, intellectual and social skills, through play and aesthetics.
Entry Requirements • Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including Mathematics, English, a Social Science subject AND a Physical Science subject and one other at General Proficiency Levels, I, II and III (effective June 1998).
B.Ed. in Primary Education (full and part-time)
The Primary Education programme prepares students to teach pupils between the ages of 6- 12 years, that is, from grades 1-6. In order to be certified as a primary teacher, a student will be required to complete successfully courses in Education, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Religious Education, Art & Craft, Music and Physical Education, Practicum and Personal Development.
Entry Requirements • Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including Mathematics, English, a Social Science subject AND a Physical Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology) and one other at General Proficiency Levels, I, II and III (effective June 1998)
B.Ed. in Special Education
This specialization is intended for those being trained as teachers, administrators and specialists in the treatment and care of persons who are challenged in one or more of the following ways: Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired, Mentally Challenged or Learning Disabled.

B.Ed. in School Counselling
This seeks to engage mature persons to be trained in areas of school counselling which includes career education, human relationships and mentoring. It involves periods of field work in schools and agencies such as Family Court, Women’s Centre, Places of Safety and schools

SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

The English Language and Literature programme prepares students to teach English Language at the Secondary level. Students must have strong communication skills with a deep interest in reading and writing. The programme introduces students to Language of the Caribbean in particular the Jamaican language, prose and poetry and drama in English.
Entry Requirements • Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including English Language and Literature and Mathematics at General Proficiency • Applicants are expected to have both CXC/CSEC English Language and Literature at grades I or II.
B.Ed. in Spanish / English Language
This programme prepares students to teach Spanish and English Language and Literature to high school students. Student teachers in this programme minor in English Language and Literature.
Entry Requirements • Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including Spanish, English Language and Mathematics at General Proficiency Levels I or II • Applicants are expected to have both CXC/CSEC Spanish and English Language and Literature at grades I or II.
B.Ed in Spanish / French (new)
This programme prepares students to teach Spanish and French to high school students. Student teachers in this programme may major or minor in either subject.
Entry Requirements • Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including Mathematics, English Language and Spanish (Grade I, II, or III) (General Proficiency). • CSEC French is not a requirement. An introductory programme will be implemented in the first year of study.
B.Ed. in Biology and Mathematics / Biology / Mathematics
This Secondary Programme prepares students to teach both Biology and Mathematics to adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, that is, from Grades 7 to 11 or Forms 1 to 5. It promotes the use of interactive methods in the teaching of mathematics, an increased emphasis on problem-solving and investigations, and the use of technology in the classroom. The Science option is designed to meet the needs of the teacher and other qualified educators who want to pursue first degree in Education with strong subject content.
Persons who pursue this degree have the following options available to them:
- Biology and Mathematics (major/minor)
- Biology (double major)
- Mathematics (double major)
Entry Requirements Five (5) CXC/CSEC subjects including Mathematics, English Language and a Physical Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology) (General Proficiency) . Applicants to any of the Biology and/or Mathematics prorammes must have a Grade 1 in those subjects at the CSEC and/or CAPE level.
