Lorna Gow-Morrison, PhD. Principal
Lorna Gow-Morrison, PhD. an educator with more than thirty-five years’ experience, has worked at all levels of the education system and lives her practice as a reciprocal collaborative process of empowerment through visionary solution focused coaching. She has a diploma and bachelors degree in Primary education, a diploma in human resource development, a masters in Educational Psychology and a doctorate in teacher education.She joined the Sam Sharpe Teachers College' team as interim principal in August 2015 and was appointed effective September 1, 2018. She is currently building on the legacies of a cadre of trailblazer principals who have led the institution since its establishment in September 1975. Under her leadership, the college has introduced a number of new programmes inclusive of the college becoming an approved training partner offering the Team Jamaica programme and offering a Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching in collaboration with the College of Agriculture, Science and Education.
Dr. Gow-Morrison is passionate about transformational leadership, cognitive coaching, mentorship and action research.
Ms. Sonia Graham
Sonia Graham serves as a Principal Lecturer with responsibilities for oversight of the Primary and Early Childhood Education programmes. She holds a Master of Science Degree in Cultural Studies, Master’s Degree in Heritage Studies, and a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Social Sciences from The University of the West Indies (Mona). She also possesses a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning with Emerging Technologies from the UWI Open Campus.
Dr. Lois Grant-Hector
Dr. Lois Grant-Hector is Principal Lecturer with responsibility for Practicum and Student Experiences. She has a special responsibility to work with students through clubs, and associations to enhance their college experience. As an educator, she pursued studies in the areas of Social Studies and Professional studies courses at the Diploma of Teacher Education level to the Higher Degree level. She is presently a Lecturer of Social Studies and Professional Studies Courses. In addition, she has the responsibility of completing the Students Success Centre in accomplishing students’ satisfaction for personal and professional development. Dr. Grant-Hector, in addition to her college responsibilities, is the Division Commissioner for the North-West Region of the Girl Guide Association of Jamaica which spans all educational institutions in North Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland.
Derron Davidson M.A., J.P.
Mr. Davidson is a Principal Lecturer with responsibility for Internal Quality Assurance at the College. He has over ten years’ experience in education and is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership. He is an Assistant Examiner for the Caribbean Examinations Council’s English and Spanish Examinations. He is also a member of the Institute for Educational Administration & Leadership- Jamaica (IEAL-J).
He developed the Quality Assurance Framework at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College which speaks to the following areas:
- Quality of programmes and courses
- Quality of academic staff
- Quality of teaching and learning experience
- Quality in student assessment: Internal moderation etc
- Quality in support services
- Quality of resources and facilities
- Quality of research
- Quality program review process
Mrs Barnes-Brown currently has the primary responsibility to work closely with the School Counselling and Special Education departments, to serve students and other stakeholders. Alongside each head of department, she works to ensure that departmental goals are aligned with the College’s strategic plan. She assists them to continue to:
- build relationships and forge effective professional alliances with external bodies,
- encourage the individual, academic and professional growth of members of each department,
- pursue and create best practices for each area,
- increase student intake and,
- conduct overall academic planning for each department.
Sheron Jullet Mathesonl
Community Outreach and Aesthetic Departments
Mrs. Sheron Matheson is Principal Lecturer with oversight for Community Outreach and Aesthetic Departments (Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education.) She is a past student of the institution who joined as a full-time staff in September 2000. Mrs. Matheson is presently head for the department of music, lecturing in music and literacy courses. She is also the on-site coordinator for the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College arm of the Child Resiliency Programme.
Sadie Mortley, PhD
Early Childhood Department
Sadie Harris-Mortley (Ph.D.) is a senior lecturer, who has been employed to Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College since 2001 and is currently the Head of the Early Childhood Department. She lectures in Early Childhood and General Education courses for full-time and part-time students. She supervises and mentors students on their practicum experience; engages students in academic advising, and scaffolds their personal and professional growth in the teaching profession. She is a council member of Teachers Colleges of Jamaica (TCJ) and an active participant of the Early Childhood Board of Studies (BOS). She is a part of the writing and vetting team for final year examinations. As the contact teacher for the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) she also serves as the staff advisor for the Young Professional arm. Dr. Mortley represents the college on Early Childhood matters and is a member of the academic and community outreach committees. She also assists Cooperating Schools with their professional development workshops for best practices and is a speaker at numerous graduation ceremonies.
Professional Studies Department
Ms. Deyon Colyard has been a lecturer at the Sam Sharpe Teachers' College for several years during which time she has performed teaching duties in the Professional Studies Department, delivering courses such as Educational Technology, Introduction to Information and Communication Technology, Assessment in Education and Classroom Management. She is presently the Acting Head of the Professional Studies Department at the college. She has organized and conducted workshops sessions at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels including training teachers in several parishes in ICT Integration in the National Standards Curriculum and Online Portal Sensitization for the Ministry of Education.
Mrs. Rosette James Smith
Mrs. James-Smith, in her capacity as Guidance Counsellor carries out the following roles and responsibilities, among others:
- Coordinates the Guidance and Counselling Programme at the college
- Selects, trains and guides Peer Counsellors and Peer Educators to assist students at their level
- Plans programmes to help students and staff to function effectively on a daily basis including Students Appreciation Day, Student and staff play day
Mrs. James-Smith is a member of the Jamaica Teachers Association and has served as DA Secretary and President and was also a member of the Salary and Conditions of Service Committee and the JTA General Council. She was also awarded the JTA’s RC Tavares Award for excellent service in the profession.
She has served at different levels in the Jamaica Association of Guidance Counsellors in Education. She was Parish President, Regional President, Assistant General Secretary, General Secretary, Chair of the Negotiations Committee and National President 2003-2004 and 2018.
Mrs. Grace Blake-McIntosh
English Language & Literature
Mrs. Grace Blake-McIntosh has been an educator for over 24 years, 16 of which have been at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College. She is presently the Head of Language Arts department where she provides organizational support for over ten department members.
Mrs. Blake-McIntosh holds a Master of Science degree in Reading and Language Arts, Bachelor of Education in English and a Diploma of Education in English &Mathematics. Her academic pursuits include Public Speaking, Motivational Speaking, Use of Drama in Literacy Development and Health and Academic Output.
Mrs. Tracy-Ann Pinnock
Diagnostic Centre Manager
Tracy -Ann Pinnock has spent over twenty years serving in the education sector. She has demonstrated mastery in her ability to deliver differentiated lessons as she served at primary and secondary levels, catering to varying learning needs while gaining valuable experience in leadership, curriculum development and project management. She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies where she completed both Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Education. She has also completed a leadership course of study with the National College of Educational Leadership. Mrs. Pinnock sees her current role as Centre Manager for the Sam Sharpe Diagnostic and Early Intervention Centre as a direct call to servant leadership. This also complements her mission as an educational leader who is focused on transforming education, and ultimately Jamaica, in bite sizes.
Mrs. Carlene Davis-Ramsay
Mrs. Carlene Davis-Ramsay as Registrar at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College serves as head of the Student Registry and Examinations Department. In this capacity she coordinates the recruitment of students for all programmes, handles examination matters and supervises the Registry, Student Affairs, and Examinations Offices.
A graduate of the University of Technology, Jamaica, Mrs. Davis-Ramsay is the holder of a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting and minoring in Human Resource Management. She has over twelve year’s related experience in educational administration. She is guided by the words of Nelson Mandela, that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Mrs. Althea Dillon Scott, RN
Althea Dillon-Scott is a registered nurse and midwife with 30 years’ experience, who manages the Health & Wellness Centre at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College. She is a graduate of the Kingston School of Nursing and The University Hospital School of Midwifery. She also completed a management program with the In-service Education unit of the Ministry of Health.
Nurse Scott’s professional journey has taken her through multiple departments at the Cornwall Regional Hospital before transitioning to Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College in 1997 as College Nurse. Chief among her responsibilities are emergency medical response, assessing patients’ (Student and staff) health issues and advising them on health maintenance and disease prevention.
She strongly believes in holistic health and advises on nutrition and exercise as well as offering sociological and psychological counsel.
Mr. Robert Edwards
Mr. Robert Edwards began his career in education in 1986 as a Pre-trained Teacher and has served at all levels of the Education System from Primary to Tertiary. A Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College alumni, he is Vice-Principal with responsibility for Academics. Having obtained his Diploma in Education at SSTC, he pursued his bachelor’s and master’s degree in the United States of America.
He later joined the staff at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College as a Lecturer. Mr. Edwards moved through the ranks from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, Head of Department, and Head of Department 2. In September of 2015 he began acting as Academic Vice Principal and in September of 2017, he was appointed to this position.
Mr. Edwards serves as Chairman of the Academic Board for the Teachers College of Jamaica, a position held since 2016. He is also an Adjunct staff at the University of the West Indies Mona in the Faculty of Education as a practicum supervisor for M.Ed. students.
Apart from being a Trained Graduate, Mr. Edwards is a Minister of Religion, an Electrician and a professional Pastry Chef. He is passionate about his hobby, cooking.
Jacqueline J. Johnson
Principal Lecturer 2 / (HOD2) - Guidance and Counselling
Ms. Jacqueline J. Johnson is Principal Lecturer 2 and HOD 2, Guidance and Counselling, with special responsibility for student welfare, upliftment, Integrity and Ethics. She serves as Chair for the Guidance & Counselling Board of Studies and is the one of the developers of the Counselling and Psychology Curriculum.
Christene Pinnock, EdD
Special Education Department
Dr. Christene Pinnock is a proud product of Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College who has returned to serve in the capacity of lecturer. Her niche area of expertise is Special Education however, she has training in Educational Leadership. She holds a doctoral degree, bachelor’s degree and a diploma in Special Education, and a master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Dr. Pinnock is passionate about her profession because of her drive to serve the vulnerable and less advantaged. She currently serves as Senior Lecturer, Special Education and Chairman of the Special Education Board at TCJ. Dr. Pinnock lives by the college’s motto, “Service, Commitment, Excellence”.
Mrs. Malbis Arranda-Morris
Mrs. Malbis Arranda-Morris is Principal Lecturer at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College with the responsibility of overseeing the Biology & Mathematics Departments. She holds a master’s degree in Education majoring in Foreign Languages, at the Pedagogical University of Guantánamo, Cuba and a Postgraduate Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the Caribbean Maritime University. She has started work on a PhD Doctorate in Education in Santiago University, Cuba.
Some highlights of her thirty (30) years of uninterrupted practice are her contribution to the opening of a Language Lab at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, the Partnership between Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College; the partnership with the Instituto Cervantes from Spain to open the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College Examination Centre for the International Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language, Co-founder of the Scholarship for Teachers College Students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish with the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation. She is also an:
- International DELE & AVE Certified Examiner;
- Online Instructor & Member of the Inter-American Teacher Education Network for the Organization of American States;
- Liaison in the 11th Policy Dialogue Forum - International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030, UNESCO;
- Regional Coordinator for the CSEC Spanish Workshop;
- National Coordinator for the Implementation of a new virtual Classroom Methodology of Language Teaching & Certification in partnership with Cervantes Institute from Spain;
- National Standard Curriculum (NSC) Primary/Secondary Master Trainer, and;
- Spanish Resource Person for the Jamaica Ministry of Education, Youth, and Information.
